Google today declared it has started rolling out mobile-first indexing for its search results. The company is migrating sites that adhere to best methods for mobile-first indexing to use the mobile version of the web page instead of the desktop version.
Google first began using a mobile-first index in Nov 2016. Until then, its search engine’s indexing, crawling, and ranking systems specifically used the desktop version of a page’s content.
Google will begin switching over sites that are currently following mobile first best methods. But while there is no announced timeline, Google will eventually be changing over sites that are even desktop only, creeping and indexing them with the mobile Googlebot instead of the desktop one.
Google began making the switch to mobile first after more than 50% of visitors were done on mobile phones and with an increasing number of sites offering cut down prepared to mobile customers, making those visitors disappointed when the web page they click through to do actually contain the information expected.

For those with responsive sites, then you probably don’t need to worry about anything. But those with sites such as m. sites with different URLs, or those providing different prepared to mobile customers compared to desktop customers, will have issues. Google suggests online marketers use the identical content, as well as relevant markup, on both the desktop and mobile editions of the page.
They stress that there is no “desktop index” and “mobile first index” but rather they are the same index, simply some sites have the desktop edition listed while others have the mobile edition of the website listed.

Google already ranks “mobile-friendly” sites greater and negatively ranks mobile interstitials. In This summer, Google’s online search engine will start ranking faster mobile pages greater as well.
